Evaluate pedestrian detection with care
Detection is an observation task. A system finding a person in an image does not establish that a crossing or a control decision is safe.

Represent the intended users
Review relevant positions, mobility aids, group movements and partial occlusion in the evaluation design. Use suitable, lawfully collected data.
Inspect missed observations
Look at errors under different light and weather conditions. A strong average score can hide a difficult situation that matters for the intended use.
Keep safeguards independent
Do not assume an unvalidated detection model can replace established protections. Use the appropriate professional review and authority for any safety-related application.
